Set in 1968, the suburban homeowners of Division Acres refurbish and inhabit a submarine to escape a catastrophic earthquake that sinks California. Their goal is to protect and eventually reclaim their underwater property.
Sub: Division! premiered as a juried selection of the RESfest Film Festival in 2000 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. It toured internationally with RESfest in that same year, and was screened at the 30th Annual International Film Festival Rotterdam in their Exploding Cinema forum as well as The Mill Valley Film Festival in a special sidebar forum. In print publications, it was a Communication Arts interactive annual winner.
I created the film out of a sense of loss for the home and neighborhood I grew up with in Ceiba, Puerto Rico. It was housing for military families but abandoned by the US Navy, leaving the homes to fall into disrepair and get reclaimed by the jungle. Informed by fantastical disaster series by Irwin Allen and gay male erotica, I wanted the look of the animated film to be nostalgic, campy and specific.
